Smudgie the Dolphin

Smudgie was a curious dolphin. He spent many hours observing the humans by the pier. One day, to his great surprise, a trinket from the humans drifted before him. It was a pen, but not just any pen. It was a beautiful fountain pen with patterned inlay and a golden nib. Smudgie knew that pens and water didn't mix but the artist in him couldn't resist.

Smudgie carried that fountain pen with him everywhere he swam. Day after day Smudgie would remove the cap, only to be covered in a wash of black ink, until one day with monumental effort, Smudgie roled his great body onto the dock beside the pier. The town's people ran from great distances to help the beached dolphin and return him to the sea but with all his might Smudgie resisted, until by happenstance, a young boy with a tiny yellow notebook ventured forward.

As quick as could be Smudgie snatched the notebook from the young child's hands. At first the town's people protested but it was too late. The crowd gasped as Smudgie produced his favorite pen and began to scribble. When he was done Smudgie gently returned the notebook to the boy and quietly slipped back into the sea never to be seen again.

Some say the great dolphin never carried a pen. Some say it never happened at all. Me? I know it was real, for I was the boy and this is the drawing Smudgie handed me, just before he disappeared from sight, many many years ago, when I ran as fast as my little legs would carry me, to edge of the pier to see the great dolphin who had washed up upon the dock beside the pier.
